Double taxation on bingo debate rumbles on
2008-05-14

The debate over the double taxation law which only affects the bingo industry continues to attract attention. Mark Formosa, a Conservative parliamentary candidate is the latest figurehead to get in on the act, visiting a local bingo hall and talking to the players.

Many are disgruntled by the bingo taxation laws which affect millions of bingo players in the UK, with many bingo halls being forced to close as profit margins because increasingly desperate.

Formosa explained: “Bingo clubs, unlike other forms of gambling pay 15% gaming duty as well as 17.5% VAT”, going on to criticize the way the form of gambling and popular pastime is taxed in a different way to similar activities. He went on to explain predictions for the bingo industry, saying that over half of the UK’s bingo halls are set to close within the next 20 years if there is no tax relief, and that around 100 of the venues are likely to close this year alone.
