Gambling on the rise in the U.S.
2008-05-20

Whether you’re a fat cat or a penny pincher the numbers from U.S. casinos is sure to raise some eyebrows. In 2007, American gamblers lost a total of $34 billion, according to a recent survey by the American Gaming Association.

The total revenue last year represents a 73% increase from 10 years ago as well as a 5% increase from just 2006. Also, this number does not take into account any non-gambling revenue, which means U.S. casinos are bringing in much more altogether.

Many casino resorts offer fine dining, live entertainment and much more that provide a large portion of their entire revenue, and a report containing these numbers will soon be published by the American Gambling Assocation.

Over 50 million Americans went to a casino last year at least once, which is about a quarter of the population.

Americans have spent more on gambling than they did at the movie theatre or buying video games combined last year, which means they are finding their entertainment at casinos more and more.

All of this revenue was taxed of course, which means that local governments earned about $5.79 billion from these casinos.

The online casino market has seen a downturn in America because of government regulations, but land-based casinos in the U.S. are doing seem to be doing very well.
